The Card Said, 'Will You Marry Me?'

Last year a soldier was going to Afghanistan for ten months. He knew that he would miss his girlfriend, that he wouldn't get the chance to speak to her, or tell her that he loved her every day. He would miss their weekends together and their weekly date nights... and he knew that his girlfriend would miss him too. The thing was, he also knew that communication would be limited, and that sometimes there would be no contact for weeks at a time. Letting his girlfriend know that he cared and missed her, and that he was still thinking about her every day was really important to him but he wasn't sure how he could do this for her.

The weeks went by and the soldier eventually left for Afghanistan after a tearful goodbye to his family. His girlfriend settled in for a long wait not knowing when she would hear from him again. At the end of the first month, after a handful of conversations, an envelope arrived through the post. The girl opened the envelope and inside was a card with a photo of her and her boyfriend on the front that said, 'I know that you're missing me right now and I know that it's hard to be apart, but I just want to let you know that I'm thinking about you every minute of every day' She smiled, brushed a tear aside and placed the card on the windowsill.

At the end of the second month, a second envelope came and this time it said, 'Thinking of you is getting me through this and I know that you're thinking of me too. Stay strong for me' The months continued, and a card came without fail, making the girl smile each time... raising her spirits and making her feel strong enough to get through such a difficult time. Eventually, the ten months were up and it was time for the soldier to return home. There had been no card this month, but his girlfriend knew that he would be home soon and that was all that mattered - she would be seeing the real thing.

They met at the station for a tearful reunion, and it was every bit as amazing as she imagined. After a while he placed something in her hand... another card. She opened it to look down at a picture of him down on one knee in his uniform and he was holding up a ring... and inside, the card said, 'Will you marry me?'
